Conte on Emerson, keeper decision, his future, Lukaku, Mourinho and expecting a ‘tactical’ cup final

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte spoke about a number of issues at a media conference ahead of the FA Cup final against Manchester United. Here’s some of what the Italian had to say.

On how Chelsea have performed this season

“I don’t like to speak about I. I like to speak about us. It is important to think together about our season.

“Last season we won the league and this season we have the possibility to win another trophy. It will be a great achievement for the players, the staff and the fans.

“Last season we lost together. We don’t lose or win alone.”

On last season’s FA Cup final defeat

“I remember very well the last final against Arsenal. It was a strange game. The first goal wasn’t good. Then we were able to come back to go 1-1 and then we finished the game with 10 men. It was a strange final and it was a pity because we had the possibility to do the double.

“We deserve to have the chance to win this trophy against a very good team.”

On his relationship with Jose Mourinho

“This is not important what happened. The most important thing is that there is a normal relationship. We will shake hands and then think about the game.”

On whether Courtois or Caballero will play

“I don’t want to give you the starting 11. Tomorrow you will see. We have only Emerson out and then no (other) news about the injury situation.”

On his future

“For sure this will be my last match… in this season. Then, as you know, I have a contract and I am committed to the club.”

On facing United

“We must be focused on tomorrow’s game. This game is very important in a difficult season. We have a chance to finish with trophy. It is important for the club, players, manager and fans to focus to win a trophy.

“The FA Cup is a really important competition – the oldest in the world. My players will be focused for sure.

“When you play a final the most important thing is to win. It will be a tactical game. I don’t what type of game we will see but it will be very tough for both teams.

“To finish the season and to play for an important trophy for the second time in a row is a great achievement.

“We have worked harder than last season. I am sure about this. This is enough for myself.”

On Romelu Lukaku being a doubt for United

“We are talking about an important player but Manchester United has the possibility to pick many important players. I don’t what is the decision tomorrow but hell if he doesn’t play there are other good players.

“You don’t change or prepare your plan for one player. If Lukaku is not playing they have another important player, like Rashford for example.”
