QPR star Freeman admits he preferred central midfield role
Luke Freeman says he is happy to play in a wide role despite preferring the central midfield position he previously operated in for QPR.
Freeman impressed in a midfield three for Rangers in the 18 months following his move to Loftus Road from Bristol City.
Manager Steve McClaren has changed the formation since taking over in the summer, meaning Freeman has been playing in a left-sided role.
“It’s certainly different. I do personally prefer playing in central midfield but the most important thing is the team,” Freeman said.
“We’ve had some success with the system we’ve been using and as a player you’d rather play in a position and win than play in a position you personally prefer but not win.
“I don’t hate playing wide by any means, I just do prefer playing in a midfield three.
“But the important thing isn’t what I prefer, it’s what’s best for the team and doing what I can for the team.”
‘Very happy’
Freeman’s performances alongside Josh Scowen and Massimo Luongo last season attracted interest from Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window.
Boro’s approaches for him were rejected and Freeman has insisted he is happy at Rangers despite admitting his “head was turned” by the prospect of a move to a club challenging for promotion to the Premier League.
“What I can just as honestly say is that I’m very happy at QPR and always have been. I’ve always loved it there,” he said.
“There’s never been a time when I’ve not been happy to be playing for QPR. I’m very happy to be there and have never felt differently.”
Meanwhile, QPR are set to sign youngsters Lewis Walker and Charlie Rowan.
