McClaren explains mix-up with QPR substitution

Steve McClaren said he understood why a mix-up with a QPR substitution against Bolton led to initial anger from the home fans.

Rangers were beaten 2-1 at Loftus Road, where their supporters were left incensed when it seemed that Pawel Wszolek was being taken off during the second half.

After a chorus of boos from the stands, manager McClaren informed the fourth official that Angel Rangel was in fact the player he wanted to withdraw.

Veteran defender Rangel, back in the starting line-up following injury, was eventually brought off.

“To be fair, if Pav had been coming off I’d have booed myself. I thought he was one of our better players,” McClaren said.

“It was always our plan that Angel would play 60 minutes and then if we were 1-0 down we’d put Pav to right-back, if we were 1-0 up we’d put Darnell (Furlong) right-back.

“Somehow the fourth official got the wrong number, held that up and caused confusion. Angel coming off was always the plan.”

Meanwhile, QPR are assessing groin injury Grant Hall suffered during the game.

  • Im now having a look at next season:-
Smythe, Wheeler, Chair & Oteh back to learn from Nahki, Luke & co
Blast it, I forgot - they could have done that this season instead of helping other clubs to improve.
Now, who shall we buy before the new season starts - probably no one which makes this season a bit of a joke.
What happened to 'the next level'? I've been waiting all season for someone to tell me.

  • Is McClaren for real??

He really hit rock bottom yesterday with his proposed substitution of Pavel, he knew exactly who he wanted off and then to blame the 4th official!! Of all the numbers the 4th official could have put up he chose 23 really!!

Any real Rangers fan can pick the best starting team it’s what to do when changes are required and McClaren hasn’t got a clue, he did the same to Pavel away to Brentford when he brought Smith on.

It is time for a change now.

  • Its amazing where all these excuses come from, especially so from an ex England manager!

  • We will never get anywhere with a defence that contains furlong,or has no-one capable of taking the many chances that we create..
