Cambridge win dramatic Boat Race

Underdogs Cambridge won a dramatic and controversial Boat Race, which had to be restarted after being halted because of a swimmer in the River Thames.

Oxford, captained by the Hammersmith-born Karl Hudspith (pictured above), were strong favourites and were slightly ahead after eight minutes when the sight of a man swimming beside the boats forced both teams to stop.

It was decided that the two boats would return to near the halfway point of the course.

There was more drama after the restart as Oxford broke an oar, leaving their rivals to pull away and win with ease.

And there was concern at the end of the race for Oxford bowman Alex Woods, who received medical attention after collapsing.
