Ouseph reaches Macau quarter-finals

Rajiv Ouseph booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Macau Open on Thursday with victory over world number 324 Heo Kwang-Hee.

The South Korean had knocked out 12th seed Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif in round two but Ouseph, seeded fourth and ranked almost 300 places above Heo, negotiated a potential banana skin with relative ease.

He quickly opened up a 9-3 lead in the first game but Heo responded to reduce the deficit to 14-11.

However, the Hounslow star pulled ahead to 19-12 and then kept his nerve when Heo threatened a comeback, eventually sealing it 21-17.

Ouseph again made a good start in the second game, moving 9-2 ahead, only to see the lead cut to 11-9.

But the west Londoner maintained a healthy gap between himself and Heo, and won the match at the first attempt, 21-17, 21-15.

Ouseph will meet 11th seed, and world number 54, Xue Song of China in Friday’s quarter-final.
