Ouseph wins opener at European Championships

Feltham’s Rajiv Ouseph began his European Championships campaign with victory over familiar foe Dmytro Zavadsky on Wednesday.

It was the third time in a row the pair had met at the tournament, with Ouseph beating the Ukrainian on each occasion.

And the fifth seed cruised through in La Roche sur Yon, winning 21-7 21-9 in 21 minutes against the world number 71.

Rajiv Ouseph’s European Championship progress
2014: Kazan, Russia – Finalist
2012: Karlskrona, Sweden – Quarter-finals
2010: Manchester, England – Semi-finals
2008: Herning, Denmark – Second round
2006: Den Bosch, Netherlands – First round

He picked up 20 out of 21 points at one stage, on his way to winning the opening game and then opening up an 8-0 lead in the second, which proved decisive.

Ouseph reached the final of the European Championships when they were last held two years ago, in Kazan, and now has a tie against either Lucas Corvee or Vladimir Malkov in the next round.
