Fulham defending ‘must improve’ – boss

Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen says his side’s dire defensive record must improve if they are to stay in the Premier League.

The Whites shipped four at home to fellow strugglers Sunderland on Saturday to leave them only two points ahead of the relegation zone.

Fulham’s record of 46 goals conceded in 20 games is the worst in the division, with Norwich next having let in 35.

Meulensteen said: “We keep working on it and trying to address it on the pitch but it needs to improve, simple as that.

“You can’t afford to go behind in any game but in home games particularly, especially when you’re dominating the game and looking comfortable, as we were.

“The third goal was the defining moment. We were attacking in and around the box, they broke and credit to Sunderland because away from home those are the sort of things you look for.

“Then it’s a poor challenge for the last goal and you end up losing 4-1, no points and very disillusioned.

“These home games against the teams around you, you need to win. Simple.

“If we had won we probably would have jumped to 12th or 13th position, it’s that tight.”
