Fulham humbled by Barnsley in opening-day defeat

Barnsley 1 Fulham 0

Fulham were given a wake-up call on their return to the Championship.

Much fancied to be among the division’s heavyweights, they made a losing start to the campaign at Oakwell and looked rattled from the opening whistle.

Luke Thomas’ 13th-minute goal was enough to give Barnsley the points – he collected Mike-Steven Bähre’s pass and slotted the ball under keeper Marcus Bettinelli.

The Whites rarely looked like scoring, although Alfie Mawson headed narrowly over and Mads Andersen denied them an equaliser by clearing Floyd Ayite’s effort off the line.

Barnsley had chances too and one of them fell to former Fulham man Cauley Woodrow, who missed the target.

And Thomas would have netted a second but for a goal-line clearance by Joe Bryan.

Fulham: Bettinelli, Odoi, Mawson, Le Marchand (Christie 35), Bryan, Johansen (Knockaertat 65), McDonald, Cairney, Kamara, Cavaleiro (Ayite 74), Mitrovic.
Subs not used: Rodak, De La Torre, Kebano Fonte.
