From losing nine on the spin, we’ve now gone unbeaten in our last four – things are certainly looking up for the club.
Last Thursday we drew 1-1 at Tonbridge Angels and we followed that up with a goalless draw against a Sutton side who have hit top form of late.
They had won five of their last six matches before coming to us – and we ended up slightly disappointed because we know we could’ve beaten them.
Their keeper Jason Brown, a former Wales international, has made some good saves but we’ve defended well to keep them out.
I’m pretty certain they didn’t expect us to play the way we did and we surprised them. We play the league leaders Eastleigh on Sunday (kicking off at the unusual time of 1pm by the way) and if they had someone watching us against Sutton, they will know they are in for a tough game.
I’m looking forward to it the Eastleigh match. When we went there we played over an hour with 10 men and they only scored from a lucky corner that was fluked in. We hit the woodwork twice so it’ll be interesting to see what we can do with 11 men!
They have got probably the biggest budget in the league, with experienced players who have been around a bit. Their manager, Richard Hill, was given a mandate to get them promoted this year and he seems to be ticking that box at the moment.
But we’ve got a talented group of players who are beginning to realise just how good they are. They have shown they can compete against teams with bigger budgets – just look back at the FA Trophy game with Barnet, they only scored late on against us.
We’ve know we’ve got a lot of hard work still to do to climb away from relegation trouble but the mentality of the dressing room is in a better place than it was a few weeks ago.
Ignoring the penalty we conceded at Tonbridge, we haven’t conceded from open play now in six hours.
At the time of writing we have the sixth best defensive record in the whole division, even better than second-placed Bromley’s.
The defence has been superb but it’s not just them – the whole team has been working its socks off. Now what we need to work on is scoring more goals.
The big question is, can we go undefeated between now and the end of the season? It’ll be very tough but why can’t we aspire to it?
Even if we can’t manage it, I don’t think losing a game now will have the same negative effect that it might have had when we were on our bad run and couldn’t see light at the end of the tunnel. We’ve been through that tunnel now.
We’re going to approach all of our remaining games in the same way and take what we can from them, simple as that.
Thursday was the deadline for Conference player registrations and we took the opportunity to add three more players our squad ahead of a punishing run-in.
We’ve got four games in six days coming up, which is a ridiculous workload that not even big clubs could handle, and bringing in these three lads will help me to rest some of our players.
Left-winger Andrew Musungu was released by Stoke last summer, while Niall McManus, who plays on the right side of midfield, has joined us on loan from Millwall until the end of the season. Both are youngsters, only 19, but great prospects.
The third signing is right-back Chimdi Akubuine. He joined Nuneaton in the Conference Premier in December but had a bit of a difficult debut against Woking and has dropped back down a division since.
Speaking of Woking, you may have read this will be our last season at Kingfield and we will start next season at Maidenhead.
The club had to submit a ground for the start of next season, so it’s gone for Maidenhead, but we’re all hoping to get into the new stadium as soon as possible.
That’s the aim long-term – short-term is about getting points to stay in this division, starting with Eastleigh on Sunday.
