Chelsea v Brighton player ratings

Chelsea beat Brighton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to give Frank Lampard his first home league win since taking over as manager. Here’s how we rated each Blues player.

Kepa Arrizabalaga: 7

Fortunately saw a Dan Burn header come off the top of his crossbar in the second half as Brighton attempted to get back in the game. Otherwise a fairly comfortable day for the Blues keeper.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 7

A characteristic aggressive display by the Chelsea skipper, urging his teammates on to try and grab a second goal. Got forward at times to trouble Seagulls substitute Gaeltan Bong.

Andreas Christensen: 6

A fairly quiet game apart from having to monitor the movement of Brighton forward Neal Maupay when the visitors occasionally threatened on the break. Always alert to danger

Fikoyo Tomori: 7

Looked at ease on the left side of central defence alongside Christensen. Seldom troubled by the visitors who found his physical presence a little daunting.

Marcos Alonso: 6

A panicked volley well wide from close range at the end of the first half when he should have at least hit the target. Booked earlier, as frustration spilled over against the feisty Brighton attack.

Jorginho: 8

Occasional touches of real quality passing, bringing Azpilicueta and Willian especially into the game. Kept a cool head to put the Blues ahead from the spot at a time when the home fans were imploring for a goal.

Ross Barkley: 7

Instrumental with a good passing range in the first half and went very close on a couple of occasions, drawing a fine save from keeper Mat Ryan.

Willian: 6

Tried to get Chelsea moving early but was casual with his finishing at times. A quiet afternoon by his standards until a fine finish, sweeping the ball past Ryan following good work by Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Pedro: 7

Unlucky to see Ryan stop a couple of fine drives when set through towards the end of the first half with the Blues seeking a breakthrough. Also unlucky to see another shot stopped in the wake of Jorginho’s penalty breakthrough.

Mason Mount: 7

Bright and bustling for the most part. Troubled Brighton with his runs from deep positions. Won the penalty which led to the 50th minute conversion by Jorginho.

Tammy Abraham: 6

Bright start, linking up well with Mount in particular. Denied by the impressive Ryan after bursting into the penalty area as Chelsea sought a third goal. Substituted for Michy Batshuayi late on.

Mateo Kovacic: 6

Came on for Barkley in the 67th minute to add some grit and industry to the Blues midfield.

Callum Hudson-Odoi: 6

Came on for Pedro in the 62nd minute and teed up Willian for the second goal.
