Mourinho ‘ashamed’ after shock Blues loss

Jose Mourinho admitted he was “ashamed” by Chelsea’s FA Cup humiliation against League One Bradford.

The Bantams produced one of the biggest shocks in recent memory by scoring three times in the final 15 minutes to record a famous 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge.

Blues boss Mourinho, who went into the Bradford dressing room after their victory to shake hands with their players, congratulated the visitors but restated his pre-match assertion that to lose would be a ‘disgrace’.

He said: “I feel happy for them, but for us I feel ashamed. And I think the players should feel the same.

“This is the beauty of football. This is the beauty of the FA Cup. But I repeat the words I used yesterday: if we lose, it’s a disgrace.

Bradford’s fightback stunned the home side at Stamford Bridge

“I know that in the history of this competition, this happens to every team now and again.

“For me it was the first time, for Chelsea it doesn’t happen a lot. It’s unacceptable to lose against a team from a lower league.

“But we should also focus on Bradford because they deserve it after an impressive result.”

Mourinho made wholesale changes but defended his team selection and insisted it should have been strong enough to win the game.

He added: “The team I selected was a good team. The only player that came from youth football, [Andreas] Christensen, he did well.

“The other players, they have to be ready to play for Chelsea, to play in any game.

“If they cannot play against a team from the Championship, League One or League Two, what do we do? The selection was good enough.”
