Chelsea clinch third despite draw at Leicester

Chelsea secured third place in the Premier League table despite being held to a draw in an open game.

The Blues had the better of the chances throughout with Ross Barkley going close on several occasions and also wasting the best chance of the game in the first half.

But Tottenham’s failure to beat Everton meant the Blues were not made to pay for their failings in front of goal.

Chelsea, who left star man Eden Hazard on the bench, needed a win to be certain of a top-three finish, dominated the first 20 minutes.

Barkley should have put the visitors ahead early on during a lively first period when he made a fine run on to a cute Jorginho pass but smashed his half-volley straight at Kasper Schmeichel from close range.

The visitors continued to have the better of things, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek heading an effort over when well placed and Willian seeing a shot saved after a dangerous counter-attack.

Leicester responded after a slow start, the impressive Ben Chilwell testing keeper Willy Caballero after a strong surge down the left flank, while Hamza Choudhury also saw a shot deflected wide.

Chelsea remained dangerous going forward and Gonzalo Higuain shot just wide with a decent low effort while Pedro had a shot blocked.

Both sides missed glorious opportunities to go ahead just before the break, Jamie Vardy making a mess of a one-on-one chance after a David Luiz slip and Higuain mis-kicking dreadfully from five yards out.

Barkley came closest to scoring in an uneventful second half, but dragged his shot wide.

And even the late introduction of Hazard, who came in for the final 20 minutes could not inspire Chelsea.
