Chelsea must not be ‘too reactionary’ in transfer market – Lampard

Frank Lampard has insisted Chelsea will not target new signings as a knee-jerk reaction to recent results.

The Blues have lost three of their past four Premier League matches and were last week given the green light to sign players during next month’s transfer window.

An appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport led to Chelsea’s two-window ban being halved, paving the way for manager Lampard to add to the squad.

But Lampard said: “You’ve got to be careful with being too reactionary.

“After the defeat at Everton it’s quite easy to come to that conclusion I suppose, just as much as at the start of the season people were saying ‘We’ve got all these young boys and it’s going to be no problem, we don’t need any players’.

“I think at a club like Chelsea it’s a balance; you have a strong squad, which I believe we have, but you have to look at if you can strengthen.

“There will be times, whether it’s January or next summer, we’ll look at the opportunity to strengthen because we want to improve.”

There has inevitably been speculation over who Chelsea might target when the window opens.

Attacking players such as Jadon Sancho have been linked and there have also been reports that Lampard will look to improve the team’s defence.

But Lampard said: “It’s always pretty fluid, so I haven’t got any exact ‘I need this, this, this’.

“You look at the squad as you go along. I wouldn’t say my mind was set on anything to be changed.”
