United send Chelsea out of Carabao Cup

Chelsea 1 Man Utd 2

Marcus Rashford’s brilliant free-kick knocked Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup.

Michy Batshuayi’s fine goal hauled the Blues level on the hour mark after Rashford’s penalty had put Manchester United ahead.

Rashford slotted home from the spot in the 25th minute after Marcos Alonso’s daft challenge on Daniel James.

Having given the ball away inside his own half, Alonso chased back and fouled James near the edge of the penalty area.

Batshuayi equalised in emphatic fashion, collecting keeper Willy Caballero’s kick and turning away from United defender Harry Maguire before galloping towards the box and firing into the bottom corner.

Chelsea were in the ascendancy, but Rashford’s 30-yard cracker clinched a quarter-final place for United.

Chelsea: Caballero, James, Zouma, Guehi, Alonso, Gilmour (Mount 70), Jorginho, Kovacic, Hudson-Odoi, Batshauyi (Abraham 79), Pulisic (Pedro 70).
Subs not used: Cumming, Azpilicueta, Lamptey, Giroud.
