Duo remain doubtful for Munich clash

Roberto Di Matteo says he is still unsure whether David Luiz and Gary Cahill will be fit for the Champions League final.

Both Chelsea defenders are nursing hamstring problems and are hoping to recover in time for the clash with Bayern Munich, which John Terry and Branislav Ivanovich will miss through suspension.

Chelsea could have done with Luiz or Cahill in their 4-1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield – a result which ended the Blues’ hopes of a top-four finish.

“We are working towards their fitness and trying to get them back as soon as we can, but I can’t put an exact date on it,” said Di Matteo.

Chelsea have been excellent since Di Matteo was placed in charge, but they were poor against a Liverpool side that won easily.

The Italian defended his decision to make eight changes to his starting line-up.

He said: “We’ve been playing every three days and this was our 19th game in eight weeks.

“Only by utilising the squad have we been able to reach two finals and give ourselves a chance with two games to go to finish fourth.

“We have pushed in every game, but Liverpool were better than us.”
