Bees lose at Boreham Wood in friendly

John Egan made his debut for Brentford as they began their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 defeat at non-League Boreham Wood, where Lewis Macleod and Andreas Bjelland both came through 45 minutes after long spells out injured.

Macleod scored the Bees’ goal, heading in Harlee Dean’s cross to reduce the deficit after Bruno Andrade and Conor Clifford had scored for the home side.

Brentford used the match very much as a training exercise, with boss Dean Smith fielding 20 players during the course of the 90 minutes.

Defender Egan, recently signed from Gillingham, almost opened the scoring before ex-QPR man Andrade netted in the 19th minute.

A mistake by Andy Gogia led to the second goal, as his misplaced header resulted in keeper Jack Bonham fouling Ricky Shakes while trying to retrieve the ball.

Bonham saved Clifford’s penalty but the former Chelsea youngster scored from the rebound.
