Lampard bemoans lack of firepower after Chelsea defeat

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard admitted that his side’s lack of firepower was again evident in the defeat against Manchester United.

The Blues were beaten 2-0 at Stamford Bridge – their fifth home defeat of the season.

Playing in the absence of the injured Tammy Abraham, Michy Batshuayi once again struggled in front of goal.

Lampard has spoken frequently about Chelsea’s inability to take their chances and it was a similar story after their latest home loss.

He said: “I don’t like the way we’re losing games, because we’re losing games where we clearly – particularly at home – have had a big share of possession, big chances, and we’re not finishing them.

“It’s a reality that’s getting clearer all the time. We’re not getting enough goals from striker areas. Tammy had his period earlier in the season. Now we’re not getting enough. And we’re not getting enough goals from wide areas.

“That’s a fact and it’s hard to win games. You can dominate as much as you want. You have to score goals to give you a feeling of superiority in the game.”

Abraham’s absence gave Batshuayi a great chance to impress but the Belgium striker failed to make an impact before being replaced by Olivier Giroud midway through the second half.

Asked if Batshuayi was being affected by a lack of confidence, Lampard replied: “Maybe. But confidence is part of football and the only way I felt you could get confidence was hard work and that goes for any player.”

Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante will have a scan after going off with an adductor injury, which Lampard admitted “doesn’t look great”.
