Superb Brentford demolish sorry Wolves

Brentford 4 Wolves 0

In-form Brentford secured their fifth win on the bounce with a comprehensive rout at Griffin Park to move up to third in the Championship.

After Wolves had twice hit the bar early on, Alan Judge latched on to Jon Toral’s pass to give the Bees the lead on the half-hour mark.

Stuart Dallas doubled the lead with 17 minutes to play after superb work from Alex Pritchard.

Wolverhampton-born Andre Gray, let go by his hometown club as a junior, drilled in the third while Jota netted in injury-time to cap another impressive performance from Mark Warburton’s side.

Brentford have now beaten Brighton, Leeds, Reading, Derby, Fulham and Wolves at home this season, and sit just a point behind top spot.

The Bees, unchanged from the 2-1 win over Fulham, were lively in the opening 10 minutes, forcing several corners, but once Wolves settled they twice came within inches of scoring.

Bakary Sako’s firmly struck free-kick had David Button beaten but clipped the woodwork and went over, while Danny Graham’s header was a little lower but crashed off the underside of the bar and bounced down in front of the line.

On 29 minutes, Brentford made the breakthrough when Toral slipped a pass into the path of Judge and he slid the ball beyond Carl Ikeme.

Wolves immediately went on the attack and Button preserved the lead when he blocked Sako’s effort at the near post.

Brentford’s watertight defence, marshalled impressively by Tony Craig and Harlee Dean, kept the visitors at arm’s length while the Bees’ midfield worked overtime to win the ball back and use it intelligently.

And it was a counter-attack started by Dean which led to the second goal. He threaded a pass forward to Pritchard, who picked out Dallas with a superb pass and the midfielder lashed the ball home from an angle.

Gray grabbed his fifth goal in as many games, cutting across the edge of the penalty area before firing a shot past Ikeme, and Jota got in on the act as he found the net from an acute angle.

Brentford (4-2-3-1): Button; Odubajo, Craig, Dean, Bidwell; Diagouraga, Douglas; Pritchard (Jota 88), Toral (Dallas 66), Judge; Gray (Smith 85).
Subs not used: Bonham, Tarkowski, Saunders, Proschwitz.
