Brentford’s 10-game unbeaten run came to an end following defeat in south Wales.

The Bees found themselves facing an uphill task after seeing the home side go into the break two goals to the good – not to mention the miss of the season from Neal Maupay.

Facing a well-organised and hard-working Cardiff side, they failed to find the back of the net on a tough afternoon.

The Bluebirds took the lead within 10 minutes after Brentford failed to clear and the ball fell to Joe Ralls, who blasted past Daniel Bentley from just inside the box.

Cardiff doubled their lead just before the break when Bruno Manga burst clear of Brentford’s midfield down the right and cut it back to Danny Ward, who fired home.

Maupay’s stunning miss came after Ollie Watkins picked him out on the edge of the six-yard box and, faced with an open goal, he somehow fired wide of the left hand post.

He almost made amends straight after the break, turning in a tight space and seeing his shot deflected wide.

The Frenchman once again missed the target following good work from Nico Yennaris and a then saw a shot fly inches over the crossbar.

Substitute Sergi Canos was involved immediately, first seeing his shot blocked before starting a move which ended with Romaine Sawyers’ shot saved by Neil Etheridge.

The Spaniard was then also denied by former Fulham keeper Etheridge, before Lasse Vibe’s shot was cleared off the line.

Brentford:Bentley; Clarke, Bjelland, Egan, Barbet; Yennaris, Sawyers, Woods (sub McEachran 77); Watkins, Maupay (Vibe 60), Jozefzoon (Canos 60)
Subs not used: Daniels, Mokotjo, McLeod, Mepham.
