Latest: Chelsea 3 Maccabi Tel Aviv 0 – Blues on course for win
Diego Costa scored his first European goal for Chelsea to all but set the seal on a winning start to their Champions League campaign.
The Spain striker hooked a terrific volley into the top corner on 58 minutes to end his drought in the competition.
His previous Champions League goal had come at Stamford Bridge for Atletico Madrid in their 3-1 semi-final victory in April 2014.
The Blues, ahead at half-time through Willian’s fortuitous free-kick and an Oscar penalty, began the second half as they ended the first, on the front foot.
But Chelsea survived a scare when Avarham Rikan’s volley took a couple of slight deflections and spun just past the far post.
However they extended their lead thanks to Costa’s first-time effort from Cesc Fabregas’ cross.
Chelsea: Begovic; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Cahill (c), Baba; Loftus-Cheek, Fabregas; Willian (Costa 22), Oscar (Ramires 64), Hazard; Remy.
Subs: Blackman, Terry, Ivanovic, Matic, Traore.
