Chelsea boss backs Ivanovic and Hazard
Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo tipped Eden Hazard to make a big impact in the Premier League following the Belgian’s tough introduction to English football.
Hazard was given a taste of what lies in store for him in a high-tempo Community Shield encounter against Manchester City.
He had an embarrassing moment with a botched back-heel, but also showed flashes of his ability and looked a real threat.
And Di Matteo, who has suggested that Hazard may need time to adjust to English football, said: “He was lively, caused them some problems and had a couple of good opportunities.
“He’s playing on the left and still finding his feet with Ashley Cole, but he showed some glimpses of his quality. I’m sure he’ll be a big success for us.”
Chelsea, beaten 3-2 by the Premier League champions, led before being reduced to 10 men when defender Branislav Ivanovic was red-carded following a challenge on Aleksandar Kolarov.
Di Matteo insisted Ivanovic, who now faces a suspension, did not deserve to be sent off.
“I’ve watched it and I thought there was no intention from our player to hurt the opponent,” said the Italian.
“It was a sliding tackle and he got the ball as well. Sometimes the red card is given and sometimes not, but there was no intention there.”
