Chelsea ended a disappointing season with a defeat and missed out on a European place.

Cole Palmer pulled a goal back for the Blues after Trai Hume’s opener and Malo Gusto’s own goal.

But they were unable to find an equaliser – and were reduced to 10 men on 62 minutes when Wes Fofana was sent off for a second bookable offence following a foul on Wilson Isidor.

Hume’s goal was a cracking volley after a long ball by keeper Robin Roefs had been headed on by Luke O’Nien.

The second was preventable – Chelsea failed to clear their lines and then Brian Brobbey’s off-target shot was deflected in by Gusto.

Chelsea were given hope when Palmer’s low shot was misjudged by Roefs, who could only palm the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

But they were unable to come up with another goal – and ended the campaign 10th in the Premier League table.
