Kerr equals Chelsea’s WSL scoring record in win at Everton

Sam Kerr equalled Chelsea’s all-time Women’s Super League scoring record as they tightened their grip on a Champions League spot with a clinical 4-1 victory over Everton.

The win moves the Blues four points clear of third-placed Manchester United and five ahead of Arsenal, though the Gunners currently hold three games in hand.

Kerr’s two goals saw her reach 63 for the club in the WSL, moving level with former team-mate Fran Kirby. Ellie Carpenter and Erin Cuthbert were also on target to ensure Yuka Momiki’s spectacular equaliser for the hosts was ultimately a mere consolation.

Chelsea took an early lead after just six minutes when Cuthbert played a precise through ball for Kerr, who finished with typical composure.

However, Everton were level within four minutes through a moment of brilliance from Momiki, who spotted Hannah Hampton off her line and beat the Chelsea goalkeeper with a stunning 35-yard strike.

Sonia Bompastor’s side dominated much of the first half but were frustrated by Everton keeper Courtney Brosnan, who produced saves to deny Keira Walsh, Alyssa Thompson, and Sjoeke Nusken before the interval.

The visitors regained the lead just two minutes into the second half.

Shortly after Maz Pacheco had missed a golden opportunity for Everton by hitting the bar from close range, Lauren James found Kerr with a perfectly weighted pass, and the striker steered a first-time finish past the onrushing Brosnan.

The third goal arrived in the 53rd minute when Thompson’s cross found Carpenter, whose deflected effort looped over Brosnan.

The scoring was completed when a Kerr header was blocked into the path of Cuthbert, who rifled a half-volley into the net from the edge of the area.

With Arsenal occupied by European commitments, this victory allowed Chelsea to capitalise on their game in hand and strengthen their position in the race for next season’s Champions League.
