Rosenior slates Chelsea players after dire display at Brighton

Liam Rosenior launched a blistering attack on his Chelsea players following their 3-0 capitulation at Brighton, branding the performance “unacceptable” and questioning their professional pride.

The Blues’ head coach, who has previously been protective of his young side, was visibly scathing in his post-match assessment at the Amex Stadium.

He accused the team of lacking spirit and courage as they collapsed to a defeat in which they lost 80% of their individual duels and conceded from basic defensive errors.

“In the basics, in the pride that you should have in wearing this shirt, that was unacceptable,” Rosenior said.

“I’ve defended the players up to now, but tonight they need to have a look in the mirror. Tactics come after the basics—having the moral courage to play, winning headers, winning tackles. We didn’t do that.”

The result leaves Chelsea in a state of crisis ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United, with Rosenior admitting there is a clear “lack of belief” within the group.

After being targeted by chants from the travelling supporters, the manager warned that he will now only pick players he can “trust” for the Wembley showpiece.

He added: “I have thick skin and I understand the frustration, but I’ve got to look at who I can rely on in difficult moments, because not enough players showed that today. The performance was damning of everything; it stood against everything I believe in.”

With the pressure mounting, Rosenior issued a final, blunt ultimatum to his squad as they prepare for the trip to Wembley.

“We’re at Chelsea. The criticism and pressure comes with the football club. If you can’t handle that, then you shouldn’t be here. It’s as simple as that,” he declared.
