Vale in line for Ireland debut and credits QPR boss Stephan
QPR’s Harvey Vale has described his decision to represent the Republic of Ireland as a “natural progression” as he prepares for a potential debut – and believes playing under Julien Stephan has helped him.
Speaking ahead of the crucial World Cup play-off against the Czech Republic, the 22-year-old said he gave much thought before deciding to switch his international allegiance, having previously captained England at various youth levels.
He is expected to feature in the game in Prague.
Vale, who moved to Loftus Road from Chelsea last year, qualifies for the Republic through his Kerry-born grandfather.
Despite having led England Under-19s to European Championship glory in 2022, conversations with the Irish Football Association had been ongoing for more than a year.
“It wasn’t a decision I made overnight,” Vale said at a news conference.
“I had a great time with England, but I’ve always been aware of my Irish heritage. Once I settled at QPR and the opportunity to join the senior set-up here was presented, it just felt like the right time.
“There’s a real energy around this squad, and I want to be a part of what is being built here.”
Tactical flexibility
Vale joined QPR in January last year, when a back problem meant he had to wait until the start of this season to make his debut.
He has recently made an impact on the right flank, but the player’s versatility has been an asset for R’s head coach Stephan, who Vale believes has helped prepare him for the international stage.
“I think being versatile helps me,” Vale explained.
“At QPR, the manager has clear ideas about how he wants us to use the ball, and that experience definitely helps me adapt to international instructions quickly.
“Whether I’m asked to play centrally or cut in from the right, I just want to be on the pitch and contributing.
“I needed a place to settle and grow. QPR gave me that. When you have that stability at club level, it allows you to look at the bigger picture.
“Playing regularly in the Championship is the best preparation for a game of this magnitude.”
