Chelsea beat Man Utd to win Women’s League Cup

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 to win the Women’s League Cup.

Lauren James scored a 19th-minute opener, and the Blues – playing in their seventh consecutive final of the competition – were comfortable, with Aggie Beever-Jones’ 76th-minute goal sealing their win.

Chelsea were on top from the start at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate ground and went ahead when James pounced on Dominique Janssen’s poor back-pass and fired her side into the lead.

At 1-0, it was easier for Sonia Bompastor’s team than the scoreline suggested. They defended well and United failed to seriously trouble them.

And any realistic prospect of a United comeback was quashed when Beever-Jones poked in the second goal after being set up by Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s cross.

It is boss Bompastor’s fourth trophy since replacing Emma Hayes last year, having led Chelsea to an unbeaten domestic treble last season.

On a less positive note, defender Nathalie Bjorn – making her comeback after three months out injured – had to be replaced after suffering another injury just a few minutes after coming on as a substitute, and left the pitch in tears.
