West Ham won 5-3 on penalties
West Ham beat Brentford on penalties to send them out of the FA Cup.
A poor miss by Dango Ouattara in the shootout proved decisive, helping the Hammers reach the quarter-finals.
Two goals by Jarrod Bowen and Igor Thiago – including a penalty from each – for West Ham and the Bees respectively brought the teams to a stalemate in the fifth-round clash.
Keith Andrews’ side started briskly and Jordan Henderson swept a shot in the seventh minute just over the crossbar.
However, West Ham responded vigorously and after Adama Traore went close with a great run and shot, they took the lead after 19 minutes.
Mateus Fernandes swept an inviting cross in from the left and with Kristoffer Ajer failing to challenge Tomas Soucek, the ball fell invitingly to Bowen to force the ball into the net from a couple of yards out.
Brentford equalised just eight minutes later. Thiago got a touch to Nathan Collins’ header before the goal was awarded following a VAR check.
Bowen netted his second goal for the Hammers on 33 minutes from the penalty spot, after another VAR check declared that Michael Kayode had tripped Traore.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men enjoyed the bulk of possession after the break but could not add a killer goal.
The second half lacked the spark of the first – until Brentford earned a penalty with ten minutes of normal time remaining to level.
West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville nudged Kayode at close range, and Thiago made no mistake with the subsequent spot-kick.
The hosts finished strongest, before the tie went to penalties.
Thiago, Keane Lewis-Potter and Mathias Jensen all converted for Brentford. However, Ouattara tamely clipped his effort into the hands of West Ham goalkeeper Alphone Areloa.
West Ham, meanwhile, netted all their penalties to go through.
Brentford: Kelleher, Kayode, Ajer (Van den Berg 96), Collins, Lewis-Potter, Yarmolyuk (Jensen 62), Henderson, Ouattara, Damsgaard (Donovan 85), Schade (Furo 105), Thiago
