Rosenior wants Chelsea keepers to fight for place

Robert Sanchez was “really disappointed” to be dropped, according to Liam Rosenior, who says Chelsea do not have an established first-choice goalkeeper.

Sanchez was criticised after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Premier League leaders Arsenal — for both his distribution and for struggling at set pieces – and made way for Filip Jorgensen afainst Aston Villa.

Rosenior has become the third Chelsea boss to drop the Spain international, as both Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca also did so during their tenures at the club.

“I’ve been really honest with Rob,” Rosenior said ahead of a trip to face Wrexham in the FA Cup this weekend.

“He was really disappointed not to play the game, which is what I expect from every player, whether they’re a goalkeeper or an outfield player.

“But the way Rob responded in training, the way he responded in terms of supporting Filip – in terms of the warm-up, in the dressing room – was magnificent.”

Squad rotation has been encouraged in recent years at Stamford Bridge, and Rosenior added that he wants to apply the policy to his goalkeepers as well.

“I look at the goalkeeper position differently for each game. I want there to be competition in every area of the pitch,” he added.

“I know traditionally if there’s a change of goalkeeper, it’s like he’s now the number one. That’s not the case at all. We will pick, and I will pick, the best team possible for each game.

“Filip has been waiting, he’s been working for his opportunity. I thought he took his opportunity really, really well.

“He was a massive influence in the game in terms of our build structure and how we created chances, and goals came from Filip. He put in a really good performance.

“But Rob’s put in great performances as well. I want there to be competition in every area of the pitch.”

Rosenior didn’t reveal who will be in goal against Wrexham on Saturday, but admitted “continuity” will be important for his squad.

He said: “I will pick the team that I think is best to win each game. I don’t think I’ve kept the same XI in any game that we’ve played.

“Now, people can say you need continuity. And if we lose, then we don’t have enough continuity. If we win, then it’s the right decision.

“I made a decision about the Aston Villa game that I think was proven correct. Hopefully, I’ll make more correct decisions moving forward.”
