Acheampong can be ‘an outstanding centre-back’ for Chelsea
Josh Acheampong has “immense potential” and all the attributes to become an “outstanding” centre-back for Chelsea, according to Liam Rosenior.
The 19-year-old has made most of his 33 Blues appearances as a full-back, but head coach Rosenior is in no doubt the London-born defender’s best position is at centre-half.
“Long-term, Josh is a centre-back,” Rosenior. “He has immense potential.
“What I like to do with all of my defenders, especially at the age they are, is put them in different positions, as it improves them.
“Josh is an amazing talent. He has all the attributes to be an outstanding centre-back. My job is to help him, to develop him.
“In a month I have met him and his parents – you can see why he’s a great lad as he’s been brought up the right way.”
Acheampong, who made his debut off the bench in the 2-0 win over Tottenham in May 2024, has started 21 games, eight of those coming in the Premier League. His only goal came in the 3-0 win away against Nottingham Forest in October.
Meanwhile, Reece James is expected to be available for Tuesday’s game against Leeds United despite feeling unwell in the build-up.
Chelsea will be seeking a fifth consecutive Premier League victory.
