Chelsea’s WSL title hopes in tatters after thrashing by City
Chelsea’s hopes of another Women’s Super League title were hammered by leaders Manchester City, who thrashed them 5-1 to move a step closer to becoming champions.
It was a must-win game for the Blues, who last season went 34 games unbeaten and won a domestic treble last season in manager Sonia Bompastor’s first year in charge,.
But the shocking defeat at the Etihad Stadium leaves them 12 points behind City in third place.
Kerolin scored a hat-trick for the hosts, opening the scoring before Khadija Shaw doubled their lead before the break.
Kerolin’s fine individual goal made it 3-0 early in the second half and she completed her hat-trick shortly afterwards with a tap-in.
Alyssa Thompson reduced the deficit but Vivianne Mediema then headed in City’s fifth.
