Spurs beat Brentford to ease pressure on Frank

Tottenham 2
Richarlison (25′)
Simons (43′)
Brentford 0

Brentford were very much second best as Tottenham got the win they badly needed to ease the pressure on Thomas Frank.

Goals from Richarlison and Xavi Simons gave Spurs the victory in the Bees’ first match against them since ex-boss Frank left to take over at the north London club during the summer.

They have been poor at home under Frank but were clearly determined to put that right against his former club.

Richarlison put them ahead by firing home after Simons did well on the left and squared the ball to him.

The goal came just after Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario pushed away a shot from Igor Thiago, who was restored to the Brentford starting line-up having been a substitute for the midweek defeat at Arsenal.

Tottenham continued to have the upper hand after Richarlison’s goal and Bees keeper Caoimhín Kelleher kept out Randal Kolo Muani’s close-range header shortly before Simons scored a fine goal.

The Dutchman dispossessed Jordan Henderson near the halfway line, drove forward and sent a low strike beyond Kelleher and into the bottom corner of the net.

Kelleher produced second-half saves to prevent Djed Spence and then Mohammed Kudus from adding a third for the hosts, while Thiago blasted into the side netting at the other end.

Brentford: Kelleher, Kayode (Hickey 76), Van den Berg, Collins, Ajer (Henry 45), Henderson, Yarmoliuk (Janlet 76), Schade, Damsgaard (Jensen 61), Ouattara (Lewis-Potter 88), Thiago.
Subs not used: Donovan, Henry, Lewis-Potter, Onyeka, Pinnock, Valdimarsson.
