Leeds v Chelsea player ratings
Chelsea slumped to a chastening 3-1 defeat at Leeds after producing their worst performance for some time. Here’s how we rated each Blues player.
Robert Sanchez: 5
Could do little about any of the three Leeds goals. Was first beaten by a Jaka Bijol header inside six minutes, before Ao Tanaka unleashed a superb long-range effort that flew past the Chelsea keeper on the stroke of half-time. Tosin, rather than Sanchez, was at fault for the third.
Trevoh Chalobah: 5
Played in a less familiar right-back role during the first half and struggled for the most part. Was caught out at the front post as Bijol climbed highest to nod in, unchallenged, for the opening goal. Moved to centre-back in the second half, but failed to keep Leeds at bay as the visitors conceded again.
Tosin Adarabioyo: 4
Suffered a horror moment in the 72nd minute that gifted Leeds their third. Tosin was caught in possession inside his six-yard box by Noah Okafor, and while Sanchez smothered him, Dominic Calvert-Lewin tapped in from underneath the crossbar.
Benoit Badiashile: 5
Misplaced a couple of sloppy early passes that gave Leeds plenty of encouragement to attack. Frustrated the Chelsea fans at times with slow build-up play and safe, backwards passes. Replaced at half-time.
Marc Cucurella: 6
A real non-factor throughout the 90 minutes. Didn’t do much wrong, but offered little on a night that the Blues really needed someone to step up.
Andrey Santos: 5
Starting in place of suspended Moises Caicedo. Struggled to find a footing in the game and was one of multiple players guilty of turning over possession in dangerous areas in the first half. Improved in the second, but will need to step up as Caicedo is banned for two more games.
Enzo Fernandez: 5
Gave the ball away in the build-up to Leeds’ second goal, which came as a sucker punch to Chelsea before the break. Offered little in the way of supporting attacks, and became increasingly frustrated when being hassled off the ball.
Estevao: 5
Never afraid to take on his man and try to deliver a dangerous ball, but didn’t get much change out of Gabriel Gudmundsson and showed his frustration by hacking down the Leeds left-back in the first half. Failed to reach the heights of last week’s performance against Barcelona and was replaced at the break.
Joao Pedro: 5
Wasn’t able to get into the game or cause any major problems as he played behind Liam Delap. Also had little joy when the likes of Cole Palmer and Marc Guiu were introduced around him as the Blues chased the game.
Jamie Gittens: 7
Showed flashes in the first half and provided a smart assist for Neto after the break. Did well to skip past a defender before delivering a ball to the back post, where his team-mate finished well. Has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent attacking threats when given the opportunity.
Liam Delap: 5
Struggled to make much of an impact up front and found himself isolated at times. Some strong hold-up play and runs in behind offered encouragement, but only had a rare sight of goal and was replaced on the hour mark.
Malo Gusto: 6
Offered more of a threat than Chalobah from right-back in the second half, but was guilty of plenty of sloppy passes, like many of his team-mates on the night.
Pedro Neto: 7
Made an immediate impact off the bench as he converted a Gittens cross at the back post. Controlled the ball with a smart touch before squeezing it past Lucas Perri. Looked the biggest threat to nick a second goal, which didn’t come.
Alejandro Garnacho: 6
Showed some good work down the left side as Chelsea chased the game, and nearly set up fellow substitute Cole Palmer with a cutback after he breezed past his defender.
Cole Palmer: 6
Came close to a goal on his return, but fired wide from Garnacho’s pass. Looks like he’ll need a few more games to get back up to speed after being sidelined for more than two months.
Marc Guiu: 6
Was brought on when Chelsea went 3-1 down. The closest he came to pulling one back was with a header directed well off target.
