Chelsea drop points in WSL by drawing with Liverpool

Chelsea dropped two points in the Women’s Super League title, drawing 1-1 against a resolute Liverpool side.

Despite a moment of brilliance from young American winger Alyssa Thompson, the champions were unable to find the cutting edge required to secure all three points at St Helens.

The Blues, led by a starting Millie Bright who made a historic 211th WSL appearance, got off to the ideal start. Just nine minutes into the contest, Thompson picked up a pass from Wieke Kaptein on the counter, cut inside, and curled a sublime, emphatic effort into the top corner—her second goal in as many games.

However, the momentum quickly faded. Coach Sonia Bompastor’s side was pegged back on 33 minutes when Liverpool’s Beata Olsson latched onto a long ball, outpaced the backline, and calmly slotted past stand-in keeper Livia Peng.

Chelsea struggled to recapture their rhythm, with Bompastor later admitting the performance “was not good enough.”

Substitutes like Aggie Beever-Jones injected much-needed energy in the second half, going close on two occasions, but the visitors lacked the clinical touch to break down the host’s determined defence.

The result leaves Chelsea trailing league leaders Manchester City by three points, underlining the importance of the two points surrendered up north.

The focus must now immediately shift to the huge midweek challenge, with European giants Barcelona visiting Stamford Bridge on Thursday in the Women’s Champions League.
