Sheffield Wednesday v QPR player ratings

Jordan Hugill scored two goals in four minutes as QPR fought back from a goal down to beat Sheffield Wednesday. Here’s how we rated each Rangers player in the 2-1 win at Hillsborough.

Joe Lumley: 6

The keeper had little to do, in truth, so good was QPR’s defending at times to stifle the hosts. He won’t have a clean sheet to his name but Wednesday struggled to find a way through for large periods.

Angel Rangel: 7

He was always going to have his hands full marking the fleet-footed Kadeem Harris, but the winger didn’t trouble him too much. Rangel’s best work was helping to halt Wednesday’s momentum.

Grant Hall: 7

Still not clear what the officials saw to award Wednesday a penalty. Hall apparently pulled Fernando Forestieri’s shirt back hard enough to warrant one, but the midfielder’s reaction completely sold it to the referee. Nonetheless, it blemished an otherwise fine outing for him. Effective in dealing with Harris.

Toni Leistner: 6

After giving away a penalty in the cup defeat by Portsmouth, it was important for him to put things right. He did that, in large part, by forming the heart of QPR’s three-man defence and helping keep Steven Fletcher quiet.

Yoann Barbet: 7

The summer signing went close to scoring the equaliser, when his header from a Ryan Manning free-kick glanced over the bar, before he put Nahki Wells through with a brilliant through ball. He’s had a mixed start to life at Loftus Road but this was a good performance.

Ryan Manning: 8

His deliveries from set-pieces were good as QPR saw a few chances come from them during the first half after they went behind. The defender was a strong threat down the wing, teeing up Hugill for the second goal with a superb cross.

Dominic Ball: 6

With Geoff Cameron and Luke Amos still not ready yet, this was a major opportunity for Ball. He took it well, though Wednesday didn’t make it easy for him with their high pressing. Gave the ball away in a dangerous area once but, other than that, it was a decent display.

Ebere Eze: 7

The talisman is usually part of an advanced three-man midfield behind the striker. This time he was operating in a much deeper position and asked with doing the dirty work; tracking back, making tackles and recycling possession. He did that effectively, even pinching the ball from Fletcher’s toes yards from his own goal.

Ilias Chair: 7

He has been desperate for first-team chances and the faith boss Mark Warburton is putting into him has paid off. The speed and energy he brought in the final third was telling, with quick changes of movement proving hard to defend against. Put Hugill in for a great one-on-one but Keiren Westwood was equal to it.

Nahki Wells: 8

It took a little while for both him and Hugill to see the ball, but when they did they really picked Wednesday apart at times. His two passes into Hugill were exquisite, and he could have even had a goal himself. Replaced by Jan Mlakar on 67 minutes.

Jordan Hugill: 9

An all-around fantastic performance. From leading QPR’s high press, to holding up the ball to bring others into play, to winning a bunch of fouls, to scoring twice – he was superb. Hugill is in red-hot form at the moment.

Jan Mlakar: 6

In a 23-minute cameo, the striker became increasingly important in the closing stages to see out the three points by running down the clock by keeping possession.
