Cahill and Drinkwater plan to stay, Telegraph say

Gary Cahill and Danny Drinkwater plan to stay at Chelsea and fight for their places rather than move on loan this week, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The transfer window is closed in England but remains open elsewhere, meaning Premier League players can still be sold or loaned abroad before the end of the month.

Reports recently claimed that England defender Cahill, who has been overlooked by Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, had been given permission to speak to Galatasaray about a possible move.

The Telegraph do not believe a move to Turkey would appeal to the 32-year-old and that he is set to stay put.

The newspaper also quotes Sarri from a media conference the Italian gave last week in which he was asked about Cahill.

Sarri said: “I think that, in this moment, for a defender it’s more difficult to play in my team after only 20 days of training.

“It’s easier for an offensive player. For a defender it’s more difficult. So I think that, at this moment, he needs to have a lot more defensive training with us.

“I told him that he needs to be patient now. And that he is very important for us.”

Drinkwater, meanwhile, has been tipped to leave after also being overlooked by Sarri.

However, the Telegraph say the midfielder is reluctant to go this week and plans to stay until the transfer window reopens in January and then leave on loan or permanently if he is still not in Sarri’s plans.
