Round-up: Austin, McCarthy, Caulker, Moses, Bees win, Middlesex miss out

Les Ferdinand has told West London Sport that QPR have not received an approach from Newcastle for Charlie Austin.

There have been numerous reports that the Magpies are looking to sign Austin, but Ferdinand says they have not made a move for the striker.

The Rangers director of football also insisted his club would not lower the asking prices for Austin or Matty Phillips, who is wanted by West Brom.

QPR have also dismissed an approach from West Brom for defender Steven Caulker.

But the R’s, beaten 1-0 by Monaco in a friendly in Italy today, could lose Alex McCarthy – the goalkeeper is being targeted by Crystal Palace.

In terms of transfer speculation, the Daily Mail say West Ham are considering offering Matt Jarvis and Kevin Nolan as part of an exchange deal for Austin, while Celtic have been linked with Chelsea youngster Kenneth Omerou.

Meanwhile, Stoke boss Mark Hughes believes Chelsea could block his attempts to sign Victor Moses.

Brentford’s pre-season campaign is under way. They won their first match under new head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen, beating FC Farense 3-0 in Portugal.

The Bees have also sold striker Will Grigg to Wigan for an undisclosed fee.

And in cricket, Middlesex came up three wickets short of what would have been an amazing final-day victory against Somerset.
