News in brief: Whites miss out on Ashdown, Mourinho and Austin up for awards

Manager Kit Symons had his attempts to sign former Leeds and Portsmouth goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown scuppered by Football League rules.

The Whites will be without suspended first-choice keeper Marcus Bettinelli for Saturday’s trip to Elland Road, and Symons hoped to bring in Ashdown as cover for Gabor Kiraly.

But the 34-year-old, who is a free agent after leaving Crawley Town last month, is unable to sign for another club until 3 January.

Boss Jose Mourinho is one of four nominees for the Premier League manager of the month for November.

Mourinho guided his side to victories over QPR, Liverpool and West Brom and secured a goalless draw at Sunderland to keep the Blues at the top of the table.

Manchester City’s Manuel Pellegrini, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew and Burnley boss Sean Dyche are also in contention.

In-form striker Charlie Austin is up for Premier League player of the month.

Austin scored three times in four games in November, against Chelsea, Manchester City and Leicester City, taking his tally for the season to seven.

The other players nominated for the award are Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, Tottenham forward Harry Kane and Daryl Janmaat of Newcastle.

The former president of Harefield United and the Middlesex FA has died.
A stalwart of the grass-roots game, West joined the council of the Middlesex County FA in 1972 and held numerous roles, becoming life member and president in 1997 in recognition of his 25 years’ service.

He was also a very active volunteer at Spartan South Midlands side Harefield, his local team, where he was a committee member for more than 30 years.

Eoin Morgan
The Middlesex batsman helped England towards a five-wicket victory in the fifth one-day international against Sri Lanka in Pallekele.

Vice-captain Morgan came to the crease with the tourists needing 15 from 14 balls, and reverse-swept his first delivery for four to ease the pressure.

He holed out to mid-on at the end of the next over, but England comfortably got over the line.
