Mauricio Pochettino has admitted Dele Alli was unhappy to be dropped to the bench for Tottenham’s win over Brighton at Wembley.

Alli’s form has been inconsistent this season and he was left out in favour of Erik Lamela, who recently returned from a long-term absence.

But Spurs boss Pochettino insisted Alli’s disappointment was to be expected.

He said: “How react Mousa Dembele? How react Ben Davies? How react another player at Manchester United or Liverpool? How does another player react when they are on the bench?

“Sure, they are not happy. No one is happy; the younger and the senior players, the more experienced, the people that have a massive salary, or only a small salary – that is football.

“Dele Alli was on the bench and then played 20 minutes. He’s such an important player for us. All players are not happy when they don’t play. All players want to play.”
