Selfless Zouma not a midfielder – Jose

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says playing Kurt Zouma in midfield in the League Cup win over Tottenham was a tactical necessity and insists the Frenchman’s future is definitely as a centre-half.

Zouma, 20, appeared to struggle in the holding role before the break, but grew in confidence, making a solid contribution in an impressive defensive team display.

The Blues were without the injured John Mikel Obi and the suspended Nemanja Matic, and Mourinho said he needed Zouma for the team’s shape.

“He is not a midfield player,” said Mourinho, who compared Zouma to Marcel Desailly after the 2-0 win. “It is not his future, that is completely clear.

“But the team is better when you know the qualities of everybody, and if Zouma couldn’t do that then we would have been in trouble. It was important to keep the balance, to keep somebody to do that job.

“During the week, we were working and feeling his confidence. It was important he felt comfortable. He was showing that confidence.

“He did very well, but it’s not his future at Chelsea to play in that position.”
