Latest: Chelsea 2 Newcastle 0 – Costa puts Blues on course for win

Diego Costa’s 15th goal of a prolific campaign put Chelsea on the verge of another home victory.

The Spain striker pounced just shy of the hour mark, driving the ball in from 15 yards after a fine move involving Eden Hazard and Oscar.

Oscar had put the Blues in front just before half-time when he converted Branislav Ivanovic’s pull-back.

Newcastle will have felt hard done by going in at the break a goal down as they were much the better team in the first half.

Petr Cech made good saves from Yoann Gouffran’s free-kick and Remy Cabella’s drive, while Moussa Sissoko hit the outside of the post.

But Chelsea, chasing their 10th win in their 10th home league game this season, were much improved after the restart.

And their vaunted front four clicked into gear to create Chelsea’s second goal, with Hazard feeding Oscar in the box and the Brazilian teeing up Costa, who took a touch before drilling home.
