Gary Cahill hauled the visitors level at Anfield after Emre Can’s effort had deflected in off the Chelsea defender to give Liverpool an early lead.

Can tried his luck from long range and the German’s shot looped into the net after striking Cahill, giving wrong-footed keeper Thibaut Courtois no chance.

Can had gone close with another deflected shot in the opening minute, when the ball flashed just wide after hitting John Terry.

Chelsea responded strongly to going behind and equalised in the 14th minute with the help of goal-line technology – ironically in front of the Kop, where Luis Garcia’s infamous 2005 Champions League semi-final goal against them was allowed to stand after being adjudged to have crossed the line.

Cesc Fabregas’ corner was flicked on by Diego Costa and after Simon Mignolet superbly saved Terry’s header, Cahill did enough to score despite the keeper’s best efforts on the line.

Cahill was soon at the centre of the action again, blocking Raheem Sterling’s shot with his upper arm as the home fans appealed in vain for a penalty.

Chelsea ended the half strongly, with Costa causing problems for an increasingly ragged Liverpool defence and the dangerous Eden Hazard seeing two shots blocked before another was saved by Mignolet.

Ramires was included the Chelsea side, while Liverpool recalled Steven Gerrard, Sterling, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Mario Balotelli to their starting line-up.

Back after recovering from a recent injury, Ramires returned along with Cesar Azpilicueta, who is available again after a suspension.

Willian and Filipe Luis are on the Blues bench, as are Didier Drogba and the fit-again Loic Remy.
