Half-time: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Captain John Terry gave Chelsea the lead in the Capital One Cup final with a goal on the stroke of half-time.

The Blues skipper reacted quickest after Spurs had failed to clear a Willian free-kick, his close-range effort taking a deflection on its way in.

And only Hugo Lloris prevented Chelsea scoring a second a minute later as he made a good save from Gary Cahill’s header.

Earlier, Christian Eriksen had gone closest for Tottenham as he struck the crossbar with a ninth-minute free-kick.

Chelsea dominated possession early on, Branislav Ivanovic nodding into the side netting, but Tottenham came to life after they hit the woodwork.

Harry Kane’s tame low effort was comfortably fielded by Petr Cech, who later gathered a scuffed Eriksen shot.

After a high-tempo start, the game became slightly scrappy with Eric Dier going in the book for a foul on Diego Costa.

But as the break loomed, Spurs made a mess of Willian’s delivery and Terry drilled home, with Cahill forcing a save from Lloris shortly afterwards.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho sprung a surprise ahead of kick-off by opting for Kurt Zouma to start in central midfield, in place of the suspended Nemanja Matic.

Cesc Fabregas was named in the three to play behind Diego Costa, while Cech got the nod ahead of Thibaut Courtois in goal.
