Half-time: Brentford 0 Ipswich Town 3

Daryl Murphy scored twice as Brentford were left facing an uphill battle at a sold-out Griffin Park.

Murphy put second-placed Ipswich in command and their third goal, scored by Paul Anderson, left them firmly on course for victory.

Murphy opened the scoring inside the first 30 seconds by firing into the bottom corner.

Jay Tabb and Murphy missed good chances to make it 2-0 before the latter eventually did so.

Former Brentford man Tabb, who made more than 150 appearances for the Bees, fired over after being set up by Tommy Smith.

Murphy’s unconvincing effort was then saved by David Button, but the goalkeeper was unable to rescue the hosts – who started the day in third place – on 21 minutes.

Jonathan Parr played the ball forward and Murphy got the better of Tony Craig before rounding Button and applying a simple finish.

And worse followed for Brentford when Tabb crossed for Anderson to score on the half-hour mark.

David McGoldrick missed a golden chance to make it four before the Bees at last threatened when Andre Gray went close from Alex Pritchard’s cross.

Brentford : Button: Odubajo, Dean, Craig, Bidwell; Diagouraga, Douglas; Jota, Pritchard, Judge; Gray.
Subs: Bonham, Tarkowski, Saunders, Dallas, Toral, Smith, Proschwitz.
