Redknapp backs Isla as Simpson nears exit

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has given Mauricio Isla his full backing as the man the Chilean has replaced, Danny Simpson, edges towards a move to Leicester.

Simpson played a key role in Rangers’ promotion from the Championship last season but Redknapp wants to sell him and Armand Traore, who is discussing personal terms with Crystal Palace after a bid was accepted.

Isla, signed on a season-long loan from Juventus, was given the runaround on his debut at Tottenham, where his new team were thrashed 4-0.

But Redknapp insists that display has not changed his view of the player – and he blames his midfielders for Isla’s problems at Spurs because they were instructed to provide cover for him on the flank when necessary.

“It wasn’t his fault. He got isolated out there – we should have got out there quicker to help him,” said Redknapp.

“When you’ve got two against one all day it’s going to be very difficult and that was the problem for him. He’ll be fine.”

Redknapp is hopeful Traore, who signed a new contract only weeks ago, will leave after Palace made what the R’s boss described as “a good offer”.
