QPR keeper Green ‘ready for selection’

QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has told the club’s website that Rob Green is “ready for selection” against Rotherham on Saturday.

West London Sport recently revealed that Rangers are looking to offload goalkeeper Green, 35, largely because of a clause in his contract that means he will land a new deal if he makes 30 appearances this season. He has so far made 25.

Alex Smithies, who had been lined up to replace him, has been sidelined with an elbow problem.

Joe Lumley, 20, has played in the last two matches, but Rangers say Green has recovered from an illness and is in line to return.

Hasselbaink, who is still without a win in his eight matches as QPR manager, said: “Rob has been training again. He is ready for selection.”

Rangers also say they will assess the fitness of top scorer Charlie Austin, who has not featured for more than a month and has not started a match since November.

“He was out with a hamstring injury, and that type of injury can be a big problem,” Hasselbaink said.

“I haven’t made my mind up on whether he’ll feature yet. We can’t afford to lose Charlie for another six weeks. We need to make sure he is ready.”
