QPR confirm signing of keeper Smithies

QPR have finalised the signing of goalkeeper Alex Smithies from Huddersfield Town in a deal worth close to £2m.

The 25-year-old has agreed a three-year contract at Loftus Road and will be available to be in the squad for Saturday’s game against Rotherham.

Rangers lined up Smithies after failing to agree a fee with Southend United for the League One club’s highly-rated keeper Daniel Bentley.

Both men were targeted to compete for Rob Green’s place rather than replace him, as the R’s have been looking for a keeper since Alex McCarthy’s departure for Crystal Palace.

However, having recently been tipped to make a move to re-sign Green, West Ham have enquired about his potential availability.

Green, 35, left Upton Park to join the R’s in 2012. He has a year remaining on his contract.
