Ian Holloway says he has encouraged Tjaronn Chery to play with more freedom in the number 10 role for QPR.

Holloway told QPR Player he is keen for the Dutch playmaker to take up different positions in order to cause opposing defender’s problems.

“That’s what I want him to do,” Holloway said. “I think he’s a fantastic footballer and very reminiscent of some brilliant players I’ve had in the past. I want to get him on the ball.”

Chery was unable to have a significant impact during Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Ipswich – Rangers’ first defeat since Holloway’s return as manager.

“We couldn’t get it out wide to him, so I wanted him to drift and float and give us a slightly different dynamic,” Holloway explained.

“Ipswich’s midfield four pressed really well and I wanted Tjaronn Chery to come back, to be a little bit freer and come deeper and play in between lines and then get it up to our strikers.”
