Phillips inspires QPR comeback in brilliant win at Wolves

Matt Phillips netted a second-half winner as QPR came back from two down to snatch a remarkable victory.

Goals from Benik Afobe and Kevin McDonald put Wolves in command before Charlie Austin’s powerful header from Phillips’ superb cross eight minutes before half-time.

Rangers levelled early in the second half when Phillips cut in from the right and tried his luck with a shot which found its way through a crowd of players and into the far corner of the net.

And Phillips scored his second with 18 minutes remaining to give Rangers their first Championship victory of the season.

The winner came after great work by Austin. The striker robbed Kortney Hause and found Massimo Luongo, whose pass set up Phillips.

Wolves dominated most of the first half and an unmarked Afobe netted from close range on 17 minutes after James Henry’s ball into the box was deflected towards him.

Worse followed for Chris Ramsey’s side when McDonald made the most of the time and space he was afforded by firing into the bottom corner from near the edge of the penalty area.

Alejandro Faurlin, back from a third cruciate injury in as many years, returned to the QPR starting line-up.

The popular Argentine and former Wolves man Karl Henry were overrun in midfield as the home side had things their own way before Phillips and Austin combined to give the visitors hope.

It was a key moment in the game as Rangers, who lost a two-goal lead against Cardiff on Saturday, this time managed to pull off a comeback of their own.

After Phillips’ first goal, they would then have gone ahead had Nedum Onuoha managed to direct a header from Phillips’ free-kick past keeper Emiliano Martinez.

The dangerous Afobe twice went close to restoring Wolves’ lead before Phillips made it 3-2 and Loungo had a decent chance to add a fourth but was denied by Martinez.
