Cesar can go for free, insists QPR boss

Harry Redknapp has reiterated that QPR do not want a transfer fee for Julio Cesar.

There were no takers for the Brazil goalkeeper, 34, during the summer despite a number of clubs being linked with him.

Manchester City are the latest club reported to be interested in Cesar, apparently as a potential replacement for the out-of-form Joe Hart.

And Redknapp is hopeful that the former Inter Milan man will get a move when the transfer window reopens in January.

“He needs to play and I feel he’s a player who could play for any team in the world,” said the Rangers boss.

“We wouldn’t stand in his way. It wasn’t that we were asking for a fee for him. We weren’t – we’d let him go on a free.

“I can’t believe he hasn’t got a club. He’s a great guy, a fantastic professional. If anyone rang me I’d recommend him 100%.

“It’s amazing that no-one has taken him but hopefully that will change in January. He needs to play because he wants to be in the World Cup.”

Rangers were desperate to offload Cesar in the summer and were willing to help any interested club agree a deal over his wages.

Cesar was keen to stay in London and sign for Arsenal but there was no firm interest from the Gunners despite months of speculation that they wanted him.

Supposed interest from several other clubs also came to nothing and he has not made a competitive appearance for the R’s this season.

Redknapp added: “He’s unlucky because in the summer it looked like he was going to go, so Rob Green is my goalkeeper and has been fantastic.

“What can I do? I can’t leave Rob out of the team and then suddenly January comes, Julio goes and I’ve got to go back to Rob and tell him he’s in the team.”
