Four of the silliest QPR transfer stories of the January window

It’s often referred to as the silly season and with good reason. The January transfer window threw up some wildly inaccurate – at times truly ridiculous – stories involving QPR.

As Rangers targeted the likes of Luke Freeman and Kazenga LuaLua, several other players were linked with the club. Here are just four of the silliest stories of the month.

You Kone be serious

QPR, restricted by Financial Fair Play and looking to cut costs, and keen to keep the average age of the squad down, were hilariously said to be targeting Arouna Koné for a loan move. At 33, and on Premier League wages at Everton, Kone was as far removed from Rangers’ radar as you could get. Daft.

Are Hu having a laugh?

Another belter from early January was the suggestion that former Fulham forward Hugo Rodallega, now 31 and with Turkish club Trabzonspor, was a target. QPR, busy trying to offload high-earning ex-Premier League players to Turkey, were said to be looking to bring one back from there. No.

Nu chance whatsoever

When Rangers manager Ian Holloway suggested he wanted an experienced Championship striker, he was immediately reported to be keen to sign David Nugent – another player whose wages put him well beyond QPR’s reach. Aside from the financial aspect, this is a seasoned forward with a host of options once Middlesbrough were willing to let him go. He joined promotion-chasing Derby for £2.5m as QPR were offering Rotherham more than a million less for Danny Ward. Reality.

Living in LuaLua Land

After West London Sport revealed that QPR were looking to take Kazenga LuaLua on loan from Brighton, it was claimed that this could be problematic and that the deal was “yet to get off the ground” because the Seagulls were instead looking to sell the winger. This while they had not only already agreed in principle to a loan move, but made it clear the deal would not include an option for Rangers to buy him. Groundless.
